Deep Creek Marina recently received Five Star Certification from Yamaha Outboards.  Just back from Kennesaw, GA, having just completed master technician courses in early December, our delaership receives it latest award.

The 5 Star achievement indicates that our dealership has actively engaged in and passed all the Marine training opportunities that Yamaha offers.  This would include technical training at a Marine training center, business management training, and service management training.  This dealership’s technicians have attended and completed many of the technical training courses offered by Yamaha.  We will have master technician certification by May 1st, something fewer than five percent of dealers have attained.

Market Outlook
Analyst upgrades Brunswick to “outperform”

Boating Industry
Friday September 25, 2009

Even if demand for new boats is slow to recover, Edward Aaron, analyst for RBC Capital Markets Corp., suggests that there is reason to be optimistic about Brunswick’s stock performance moving forward.

“With liquidity risks now behind it and dealer inventories coming in line,” he explained in a report released this morning, “we view [Brunswick] as a compelling three-year earnings recovery story. We believe the rate of improvement in profitability and inventory metrics beginning in 2010 will provide reason for optimism, even if demand is slow to recover.”

RBC’s report outlines, through a survey of nearly 150 dealers, that consumer confidence and the availability of financing are the leading concerns among marine dealers. In response to a question that asked dealers what they though were the biggest challenges they currently faced, nearly 75 percent of dealers said, “low consumer confidence,” and 60 percent of dealers noted “tighter lending standards.” After that, “competitor discounting” (40-plus percent) and “poor showroom traffic” (35-plus percent) followed as the largest challenges.

Download the full report here.

Despite these challenges, however, Aaron suggests that Brunswick’s production should be significantly higher in 2010-2011, even if demand does not improve.

“With flat demand, we estimate that Brunswick’s boat segment revenue will grow 65 percent and 35 percent, respectively, over the next two years,” he wrote in his report. “As production ramps back up, Brunswick should experience dramatic margin improvement in 2010. At the same time, we believe dealer inventory levels will fall to unprecedented low levels in 2010 (13 weeks by 3Q-10 by our math).”

In RBC’s survey, 35 percent of all dealers surveyed suggested their new boat inventory level was “about right,” and only about 6 percent suggested that it was way too high. Of the Brunswick dealers in the survey, 29 percent suggested that their inventory was “about right” and an equal number reported that their inventory was “low,” giving it a 2 on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being “way too low” and 5 being “way too high.” And only about 3 percent of the Brunswick dealers suggested their new boat inventory was “way too high,” whereas 7 percent of non-Brunswick dealers said their inventory was “way too high.”

“In 2009, we estimate that Brunswick will under-ship retail by nearly 50 percent,” Aaron added in his report. “By year-end, this should put dealer inventory at much healthier levels. Assuming flat retail demand and 1:1 inventory replenishment, Brunswick would need to roughly double production to meet demand.”

RBC Capital Markets balanced its view and report with the acknowledgement that a number of unique factors create an uncertainty about the future. They note an unusual level of recent discounting and a future that may cause Brunswick dealers to have further trouble competing with inventory liquidation by their competitors. “Moreover, if we are correct in our view that Brunswick's pipeline inventory levels could fall as low as 13 weeks next year, we believe it is highly probable that the company will leave some sales on the table,” Aaron added.

Big wheels Surf Wave Recipe given to pass along from anonymous Malibu Surfer
Water Depth -
is the most important factor. 30 feet is a good start. The deeper the better and the shallower the less powerful the wave becomes.
Smooth Water - is always a pleasant factor
Speed -
faster creates a longer wave and slower creates a shorter steeper wave. Minimum speed
is 10.4 mph max speed well I have been up to 15.8 and was able to keep up but felt like I
was running a marathon and typically ride between 12.6 and 13.0.

Faster = Advanced
Slower = Beginner
Board -some boards are slower than others,
therefore some boards can handle a faster wave than others - nuff said.
Cruise Control - helpful but I don’t always use it
Wedge - half wedge will result in slower speeds and a steeper wave (beginner) full wedge
allows for a longer wave (intermediate) and no wedge seems to create the cleanest wave
(advanced)
Factory Ballast - all full except rear right
Fat Sacs - 750 in rear locker (will result in about 550 lbs.) 550 under seat in front of rear
locker (will result in about 400 lbs.) 350 under seat nearest your batteries and largest seat
cushion (will result in about 300 lbs.) 750 on top of seat in front of rear locker, 750 on
floor length wise and next to seat in front of rear locker, 400 in walk through
You may take some water on from time to time. If the rider falls stop the boat, allow all
waves to pass and then gently retrieve your rider
Use a surf rope or you will jack yourself up
Wear a vest it makes it easier to get up
Yes a good wave can be achieved with less weight
it just will not be as powerful.

A FREE check of your vessel's compliance with federal and state requirements is scheduled for:

Date: Sunday August 2, 2009

Time: 9-3

Place:  Deep Creek Marina South

The Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety.

No citations are issued and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display if the vessel has passed the examination.

An example of some of the items checked include:

Life Jackets
Registration and numbering
Navigation lights
Ventilation
Fire extinguishers
Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
Battery cover and connections
All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a citation later.

For those of you who purchase gasoline for your boat from  DEEP CREEK MARINA, WE HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR YOU AT LEAST TEMPORARILY ON DEEP CREEK LAKE with repsect  to ethanol in gasoline.

I still urge you all to oppose this as it has pretty far reaching impact, or at least become aware of the situation.

Boaters Urged to Speak Up on Ethanol Increase Before July 20 Deadline

EPA Comment Period on Proposal for E15 Gasoline Closes in Two Weeks

The idea of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allowing the introduction of a fuel that has never been independently tested for use with marine engines has the Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA), the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.), and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) urging every boater in America to speak out on the issue before the July 20 federal comment period closes.

In March, Growth Energy, a pro-ethanol lobbying organization, and 54 ethanol producers petitioned the EPA to allow an increase in the amount of ethanol in gasoline from 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15).  After an initial comment period that drew nearly 30,000 comments from concerned boaters, the marine industry, marina operators and many other boating groups, the agency extended the comment deadline to July 20.

The MRAA, BoatU.S. and NMMA are concerned because boat engines are not designed, calibrated or certified for use with gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol. Recreational boat warranty documents and manufacturers owner’s manuals currently advise boaters not to use gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol, and therefore, the use of E15 in marine engines could void engine warranties and damage motors and fuel systems.

“This is not about growing renewable energy,” says BoatU.S. Vice President of Government Affairs Margaret Podlich.  “This is really about a group of investors attempting to profit at the expense of 13 million recreational boat owners.  We had significant problems with the nationwide roll-out of E10 a few years ago, and without further independent testing of E15 with marine engines we are very likely to see similar issues.” Podlich is referring to the widely known problems with ethanol’s ability to attract water into gasoline or “phase separate” which has led to boat engine failures and major repair or replacement costs for boaters. It also degrades fiberglass boat gas tank walls.

If the ethanol lobby’s petition is approved it would also affect other gasoline powered products. “This will impact 500 million gasoline powered engines in the U.S., from boats and autos to chainsaws, lawn mowers and ATVs, so this goes beyond recreational boating industry,” said MRAA President Phil Keeter.  “We need science — not politics — to determine EPA’s decision on whether to grant the request to allow an increased ethanol blend.  At present, there is not sufficient scientific and technical data to justify granting the increase.

Boaters can go to http://www.BoatUS.com/gov or http://capwiz.com/nmma/home/ before the federally mandated comment period ends on July 20 to learn more and send EPA an email asking them to deny the petition for a waiver for the use of E15 fuel until more testing is done on marine engines and fuel systems.
